FALSE: Gov. Gavin Newsom is forcing low income housing in neighborhoods destroyed by the LA fires.

Fact
To be 100% clear:
– NO laws have changed that require new low-income housing in place of older apartments.
– NO mandates exist requiring entire buildings be rebuilt as affordable housing.
– The grant announced, which developers can voluntarily to apply for, DOES NOT change zoning laws or housing policy in any community. The grant simply helps disaster-impacted communities, including Altadena, recover and meet EXISTING, long-standing housing needs at every income level.
FACT: The Governor has taken steps to make rebuilding easier, not harder — including suspending certain replacement mandates in the coastal zone to allow for faster recovery.
FACT: State law DOES NOT require rent-controlled units destroyed in the LA fires to be replaced with low-income units.
FACT: There is NO state law requirement that they be income-restricted or reserved for “low” or “very low” income households.
Pushing anything to the contrary is misleading and stokes unnecessary fear at a time when communities are trying to rebuild.
